Victorian/Edwardian Spice Cup

900ml (1½ pints) Water
340g (12oz) Sugar
4 Oranges
3 Lemons
12 Cloves
5cm (2in) Stick Cinnamon
2 drops Oil of Wintergreen

Boil the sugar, water and spices together for 5 minutes and allow the syrup to cool.
Add the juice of the lemons and oranges and the wintergreen oil and serve in glasses over cracked ice.
Garnish each glass with slices of orange and lemon or a piece of preserved ginger.

Serves: 6-8
